MARSUPIALIZATION
Marsupialization is one of the surgical technique of cysts removal. In gynecology, this procedure involves the treatment of a cyst of the Bartholin gland (mucus secreting gland, located at the entrance of the vagina at the height of the lower third labia).
Symptoms of the Bartholin gland inflammation
The doctor makes an incision of the cyst wall, empties its contents, and sutures the cut edges of the cyst walls in the mucosa, to prevent its re-completion and closure. Marsupialization does not give a 100% certainty that the treated abscess will never return in the future. If such an event occurs, it is advisable to remove the Bartholin gland completely.
This procedure is performed under intravenous anesthesia and takes about 10-15 minutes.
Preoperative recommendations
The treatment is preceded by a consultation visit. The following tests must be performed (it is possible to conduct them on-site):
- blood group
- morphology
- urine analysis
- coagulation blood tests - APTT, INR, PT
- ECG after the age of 40
- HBS antigen
- electrolytes
- blood sugar level
Patients are not allowed to take neither aspirin (including its derivatives e.g. Acard), Vitamin E nor any cough and anti-flu medicine for the period of two weeks before the procedure. Thus these kind of drugs adversely affect the bleeding process.
Please limit smoking to 3-4 cigarettes a day 3 days prior to surgery.
Please inform the doctor about any infections that took place two weeks prior to surgery.
Patient should remain six hours of fasting (no eating or drinking) before the surgery
Post-operative period
After Marsupialization the patient stays at our Clinic for a few hours and is discharged home on the same day. A follow up visit should take place after about 7 days. An appropriate hygiene of the intimate areas is crucial for a fast recovery – the intimate areas should be washed 2 times a day for 7 days. Patients should avoid wearing tight and synthetic underwear. Patients may feel a mild pain which should go away after OTC painkillers.
Scrupulous adherence to the recommendations described is a key operative for a rapid recovery and significantly affects the final result of the surgery.
