HYSTERECTOMY

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure during which the doctor removes the uterus. It is performed under a spinal anesthesia.

The duration depends on the technique and the scope of the surgery and it ranges from 40 to 120 minutes. During each surgery

the removed tissues are obligatory sent for the histopathological examination.

There are two kinds of procedures:

-       A partial hysterectomy which is the removal of the uterus only

-       A complete hysterectomy which is a removal of the uterus body and cervix.

There are several methods of the mentioned above procedures. The most commonly performed include the following:

hysterectomy from the vaginal access:

• classic method
• assisted laparoscopic - LAVH

hysterectomy from an abdominal access

• Via laparotomy or minilaparotomy
• Laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy - LSH

MYOMECTOMY

Myomectomy is an operation that involves the surgical removal of the uterine fibroids. Unlike hysterectomy, the uterus is partially or completely preserved. This treatment is therefore indicated for women who want to give birth in the future, are treated for infertility or need to keep the uterus for other, not mentioned here reasons. The aim of this operation, next to retaining the reproductive ability, is to alleviate the following symptoms: heavy and painful menstrual periods and a general discomfort in the abdomen. The presence of fibroids, which do not affect the women’s fertility and do not give strong and painful symptoms, is not an indication for this surgery.

There are several ways to remove the fibroids, depending on their quantity, size and location. If the myoma is located submucosally on the back of the uterus wall it is possible to remove it with hysteroscopy. With laparoscopy it is possible to remove up to three, 10 cm fibroids. In any other cases it is necessary to perform a laparotomy.

The operation is performed under a general or local anesthesia and lasts from 45 to 90 minutes. Removed fibroids are sent for histopathological examination to rule out their malice.
