HYSTEROSCOPY
Hysteroscopy is a gynecological procedure used in the diagnosis and treatment of the following disorders: abnormal bleeding, recurrent pregnancy loss or impairment of fertility.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy plays a very important role in the prevention and diagnosis of any uterus mucus membrane pathology, including precancerous lesions and cancer. The treatment begins with an assessment of the patient’s cervical canal and the diagnosis of any kind of abnormalities present inside the uterus. It is assessed with a specialized optical equipment, optical fiber and a video camera.
During the procedure the uterine lesions (such as fibroids, polyps and adhesions), which are the cause of pain, bleeding and pregnancy problems, are removed.
Indications:
• Infertility
• Disturbances in the menstrual cycle
• Bleeding of an unknown etiology
• Abnormal shape and size of the uterine cavity
• Incorrect USG picture of the endometrium
• Abnormal structure and function of the uterine tubal ostia
• Long-term hormone therapy (estrogenoterapia, tamoxyfen)
• Adhesions, septum, polyps, submucosal myomas
• Changes in proliferative endometrial and endocervical
• Removal of foreign bodies - such as a misplaced IUD
The procedure is performed under a short term general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and it takes about 10 minutes. During the surgical hysteroscopy samples of abnormal proliferative changes are collected and sent for the histopathological examination.
Preoperative recommendations
The treatment is preceded by a consultation visit. The following tests must be performed (it is possible to conduct them on-site):
- blood group
- morphology
- urine analysis
- coagulation blood tests - APTT, INR, PT
- ECG after the age of 40
- HBS antigen
- electrolytes
- blood sugar level
Patients are not allowed to take neither aspirin (including its derivatives e.g. Acard), Vitamin E nor any cough and anti-flu medicine for the period of two weeks before the procedure. Thus these kind of drugs adversely affect the bleeding process.
Please limit smoking to 3-4 cigarettes a day 3 days prior to surgery.
Please inform the doctor about any infections that took place two weeks prior to surgery.
Patient should remain six hours of fasting (no eating or drinking) before the surgery
Post-operative period
After a hysteroscopy the patient is discharged home after a few hours. A follow up visit should take place after about 7 days. The patient may feel a mild pain which should go away after OTC painkillers.
Scrupulous adherence to the recommendations described is a key operative for a rapid recovery and significantly affects the final result of the surgery.
